DIY Face Mask with Filter Pocket without Sewing Machine | Free Pattern
Last January 2020 was the first COVID-19 outbreak here in Macau. As disposable facemasks began to run out due to panic buying and an increase in demand, I started thinking of making my own. Since I don't have a sewing machine, I sewed one by hand. And for the last four months, I have been making these DIY Face Masks.
Here is the step-by-step procedure:
Free Pattern
STEP 1
Use the pattern above or if you have a disposable face mask, use it as a pattern. Fold the mask into half, then stretch the folded part.
Fold the fabric right side together and trace the pattern.
Leave about 1 cm allowance at the top and bottom of the mask, then 5cm on the side.
Then cut it.
For your second layer and pocket to filter, do the exact same thing except for the sides. Make the sides of the second layer, 5cm shorter than the first layer.
Tip: Use your old shirt or pillowcase so you don't need to sew the sides. Use the part of the old shirt or pillowcase with the hem.
STEP 2
Sew the curved edges using a backstitch or running stitch.
STEP 3
Then flip the outer fabric to the right side then place the inner fabric on the top, right side facing the right.
Sew the top and bottom curved edges.
Carefully, flip it over to the right side.
STEP 4
Make a small fold on the excess fabric on the side then fold again.
Place the elastics then sew using invisible stitch.
Do this for both sides.
Insert the filter and you're done!
